Pongal celebrations with my Grandmom

Fun time with grandparents and cousins

I would like to recollect Pongal celebrations with my grandmother. My grandmother used to draw kolam outside the house before we wake up so that I can colour the kolam with my cousins. Next, we decorate the Pongal pot. After that we make the Pongal by putting two bricks and keeping the Pongal pot on it. Then we light the fire wood, pour some water in the pot and wait for it to boil. After that, we all add the rice and dhal in the Pongal pot.when it rises and overflows and we say Pongal o Pongal!! Then, we add the jaggery, cardamom and we have delicious sweet Pongal. We offer the sweet pongal to God as a thank giving for the year of good crop and harvest.

The next day is the Mattu Pongal .My grandmother prepares the pongal and gets sugarcane and banana ready for the cow and the calf. Then she calls the milkman to bring the cow and the calf. We usually have to wait for the cow to finish getting their horns painted, wearing bells and come .Soon, the cow and the calf reaches home with painted horns and bells. First I was a bit scared of the cows. We offer our prayers to the cow and calf. Then, we offer the pongal, sugarcane and bananas to them and they eat the food slowly. After that, the cow and calf leaves with the milkman. Finally we get back inside to play with cousins and relax after a busy long day.
